It has to be said I wasn’t a dog lover when we got George but seeing as he wasn’t my pet as such that wasn’t a problem, however over time we became best friends, so much so that I ended up having a pet of my own and introduced him to George as his brother Powder. I remember when we got George he was such a little fur ball of energy, and his life with us has been one of joy and endless activity. It’s been fun taking him for walks in the evenings when suddenly you realize that a black dog blends into the night a little too well to the point where sometimes you have no idea where he is as he can’t be seen. Three of my favorite memories of him would have to be:-
1) We left him home alone one day only to return and find that he had pulled the settee from one end of the living room to the other and had torn the settee to shreds, the sheer devastation was one to behold and admire in a perverse sort of way until I realized he had eaten a collection of my Laser discs which again didn’t bother me until I had realized he had eaten my Whoopee Goldberg laserdisc. What sacrilege.
2) Another time we arrived home to find that George had found a stash of money we had hidden in the house because we hadn’t had time to go to the bank, on opening the front door there was money strewed all over the carpet from one end of the living room to the other. Oh my God, I nearly had a heart attract, but what a dog, not one note was eaten, and I personally think George had sat there playing with it putting it into piles ready to spend on dog treats.
3) Lastly we took him for a walk one night on the field with his brother Powder and suddenly he got ahead of us and before we knew it he wasn’t anywhere to be seen, we called his name and no reply, we started to panic and were searching the field to no avail, only to find that he had got bored and gone home without us. My God did we panic not realising the clever little bugger had a mind of his own.
George had a fascination with lights and shadows, never allowing you to take a good picture of him as the moment he saw the flash of a camera or a light he would focus on the floor waiting for you to make the light move so he could chase it around the room like some demented demon. George has to be praised for teaching me the value a pet can give a human being. He has brought a level of joy into our lives that will be unsurpassed. George has been faithful, loving, crazy, caring, loyal, protective, and a special companion.
I believe if George could speak he would say thank you for my lifetime of fun and memories, also thank you for taking me out in the car to all the places we visited, thank you for letting me play and lord it over Powder as he has been brilliant company while you two have been at work. I would have loved it had you let me sleep on the bed instead of downstairs but other than that thanks mum and dad for everything. I especially loved it when you took me the grooming parlour and the day after more of my hair would come out as I was molting turning your cream carpet into a black mohair carpet. I especially loved filling up the Dyson with hairs every day giving you an endless job of cleaning up after me. Memories like that always made me chuckle to myself. I can’t wait to watch you when I’m in doggy heaven eating a huge Pedigree Jumbo Bone, and my o my I am going to eat some pigs ears as I know they drove you nuts when I would spend my time chomping on them.
Lastly Mum and Dad would like to say thank you George for everything, and we thank God for bringing you into our lives. You will be sorely missed and never forgotten.
A letter from your pet in heaven

To my dearest family,
some things I'd like to say.
But first of all, to let you know,
that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from the Bridge.
Here I dwell with God above.
Here there's no more tears of sadness.
Here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy
just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I am with you
every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you
when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me
and He said, "I welcome you.
It's good to have you back again,
you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family,
They'll be here later on."
God gave me a list of things,
that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list,
was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night
the day's chores put to flight,
God and I are closest to you...
in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth,
and all those loving years,
because you are only human,
they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry:
it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers,
unless there were some rain.
I wish that I could tell you
all that God has planned.
If I were to tell you,
you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain,
though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now,
than I ever was before.
There are rocky roads ahead of you
and many hills to climb;
But together we can do it
by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy
and I'd like it for you too;
That as you give unto the world,
the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody
who's in sorrow and pain;
Then you can say to God at night...
"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented...
that my life was worthwhile.
Knowing as I passed along
I made somebody smile.
God says: "If you meet somebody
who is sad and feeling low;
Just lend a hand to pick him up,
as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street
with me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps
only half a step behind."
"And when it's time for you to go...
from that body to be free.
Remember you're not going...
you're coming here to me."
Precious Love
The agony is so great...
and yet I will stand it.
Had I not loved so very much...
I would not hurt so much.
But God knows I would not want to diminish
that precious love...
By one fraction of an ounce.
I will hurt...
And I will be grateful for that hurt
For it bears witness to the depth of my love.
And for that I will be eternally grateful.

Bless you
I think you brought a lot of happiness to Mario and we all know when you lose a much loved pet, it is heartbreaking.
Beyond the Rainbow
As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played,
I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade.
I saw a wondrous image then of a place that's trouble-free
Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity.
I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side
Were meadows rich and beautiful -- lush and green and wide!
And running through the meadows as far as the eye could see
Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be!
My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new
And I wanted to go run with them, but I had something left to do.
I needed to reach out to you, to tell you I'm alright
That this place is truly wonderful, then a bright Glow pierced the night.
'Twas the Glow of many Candles shining bright and strong and bold
And I knew then that it held your love in its brilliant shades of gold.
For although we may not be together in the way we used to be,
We are still connected by a cord no eye can see.
So whenever you need to find me, we're never far apart
If you look beyond the Rainbow and listen with your heart.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Our Friend
We used to look after George when Pat & Mario went on holiday. We knew him from a puppy. He was one of the most loyal dogs you could wish for. An amazing guard dog but once you got to know him, he was a big softy full of love.
We will miss you big time, Hope you have gone somewhere nice in doggy heaven, with lots of treats & cats ( Boy did he love cats..lol ).
I know what you're thinking. You think I'm dead. Because you cannot see me with your human eye, cannot feel me with your hands or hold me in your arms, you think I am gone forever.
You recall how I looked when I left this place, and you cannot remotely imagine that I could possibly be alive in another place. You are racked and torn by the pain of our separation and it blinds you to that which is right in front of you... me..............
I'm here to tell you different. You were worthy of my love and undying devotion on earth as I of yours. Do you really believe this love would be snatched from us forever by a loving Creator simply because I wasn't human? Was I not a living, breathing creation with personality? How could I have been so if I didn't possess the energy of soul, spirit and loving light? And if this energy is and always will be, then how can it be that I am dead?
.................
You say that all you have left are memories. Not so. You see, when I took leave of my earthly body I left a little something behind for you. You can't touch it, hold it or examine it for what I left behind is far too uninhibited for confinement. I left behind a piece of my soul. I placed it right next to your own which is quite fitting as we were always side by side in our earthly life together. I love you too much to have left you with nothing but memories, which tend to fade and grow cloudy as the years go by.
I love you too much to have vanished without a trace. How selfish it would be of me to remove love and light from your life.
.............
I understand your tears, each one you shed is testament to your love for me and I am honored and humbled. But don't forget the good things we shared - remember and smile. This is an honor for me as well. And when you need me I will be here. Close your eyes, relax, take slow, deep breaths and picture me in your mind. Shut off the world and your notions of what death is and give me a chance. Look for the subtle signs I send you. Don't stop being proud of me, I am a friend to be proud of, I am still your friend and soul mate.
Don't memorialize the death of my body but instead honor and celebrate my never-ending life for it is eternal and forever as is my love for you.

The Spirit of a German Shepherd Dog
I was standing on a hillside
In a field of blowing wheat
And the spirit of a German Shepherd
Was lying at my feet.
He looked at me with kind dark eyes
An ancient wisdom shining through
And in the essence of his being
I saw love there too.
His mind did lock upon my heart
As I stood there on that day
And he told me of this story
About a place so far away.
I stood upon that hillside
In a field of blowing wheat
And in a twinkling of a second
His spirit left my feet.
His tale did put my heart at ease
My fears did fade away
About what lay ahead of me
On another distant day.
"I live among God's creatures now
In the heavens of your mind
So do not grieve for me, my friend
As I am with my kind.
My collar is a rainbow's hue
My leash a shooting star
My boundaries are the Milky Way
Where I sparkle from afar.
There are no pens or kennels here
For I am not confined
But free to roam God's heavens
Among my Shepherd kind.
I nap the day on a snowy cloud
Gentle breezes rocking me
And dream the dreams of earthlings
And how it used to be.
The trees are full of liver treats
And tennis balls abound
And Milkbones line the walkways
Just waiting to be found.
There even is a ring set up
The grass all lush and green
And everyone who gaits around
Becomes the Best of Breed.
For we're all winners in this place
We have no faults, you see
And God passes out those ribbons
To each one, even me.
I drink from waters laced with gold
My world a beauty to behold
And wise old dogs do form my pride
To amble at my very side.
At night I sleep in an angel's arms
Her wings protecting me
And moonbeams dance about us
As stardust falls on thee.
So when your life on earth is spent
And you stand at Heaven's gate
Have no fear of loneliness
For here, you know I wait xxx
George - the first time I met you, you absolutely scared the living daylights out of me. But I soon realised you were a big softie and fell in love with you very quickly. My only regret is not seeing more of you. Rest in Peace xxx
